When Eugénie reached the age of seven, Franval took her
to his wife. This affectionate parent, who had not seen her own
child since she brought it into the world, was unable to caress
her enough; she held her two hours tightly to her bosom and
|
covered her with kisses and tears. She
wanted to know what little talents she had; but Eugénie
had only those of reading fluently, enjoying the most vigorous
health, and being as beautiful as an angel.
|
Madame de Franval's despair was renewed
when she realized that it was only too true that her daughter
was ignorant of even the first principles of religion.
"What, sir," she said to her
husband, "are you bringing her up for in this world?
| |||||||||||||||||||
Have you not stopped to consider
that she may not live in it more than a moment? Like us, she
will plunge into fatal eternity, if you deprive her of
something that will allow her to enjoy a happy fate at the feet
of the Being to whom she owes her life."
|
"Madame," replied Franval,
"if Eugénie knows nothing, if these maxims have
been carefully kept from her, she cannot be unhappy. For if
they are true, the Supreme Being is too just to punish her for
her ignorance, and if they are false, what need is there to
talk to her of them?
|
As for other cares of her education, I beg
you to trust me; as from today I am her teacher, and I declare
that in a few years, your daughter will surpass every child of
her own age." ;-))
